I chose to buy my own cassettes of those two albums. I had gone with some family on a shopping trip and was given $25.00 to spend. This album, along with 1992’s Adrenalize, is one of the first albums I can remember purchasing with my own money. I burned through at least three cassette copies of this album before finally getting it on CD (along with the rest of the band’s albums) for my tenth birthday in 1996. I began stealing her cassettes of the album and playing them so much that they snapped. My mom, being a big fan of the band, exposed me to this music and it stuck. You couldn’t turn on MTV between 19 without seeing one of those videos. “Women” hit #80, “Animal” #19, “Hysteria” #10, “Pour Some Sugar On Me” #2, “Love Bites” #1, “Armageddon It” #3, and “Rocket” #12. Hysteria was finally finished in January of 1987 and over the course of more than two years, no fewer than seven singles were released and all of them charted on Billboard’s Hot 100. Hired and fired producers, illnesses, and of course, drummer Rick Allen’s car crash that left him without his left arm. This album is almost single-handedly responsible for my love of Def Leppard and music in general.Īfter striking gold (at least in the US) with the then-six million selling album Pyromania in 1983, Def Leppard went to work on its follow-up. What can I say about this album? The band started working on it years before I was born, and yet I was just over a month away from my first birthday when it was released. I was fortunate enough to see the first (and second) performance of the song live. Collen also played and sang on the track alongside his Delta Deep bandmate Debbi Blackwell-Cook. The album also featured a brand new studio track, “Save That Goodness,” which was written and produced by Def Leppard’s Phil Collen. In 2016, Tesla released Mechanical Resonance Live, which was recorded on their 2015 tour and featured the band performing the album in its entirety. “Cumin’ Atcha Live” is the band’s most common concert opener, and songs like “Gettin’ Better” and “Changes” were so good they were awarded spots on the band’s original greatest hits compilation, 1995’s Time’s Makin’ Changes. While Mechanical Resonance technically only had two singles (“Modern Day Cowboy” and “Little Suzi”) released, several very strong album tracks are present.
Tesla’s Mechanical Resonance was their debut album, and since it came out in 1986, they tend to get unfairly lumped in with all of those terrible hairbands. I cannot stand all of the carbon-copy-hairbands that exploded onto the scene in the mid to late 80’s as a result of Def Leppard’s extreme success with 1983’s Pyromania album. I’ve since learned that Tesla is one of the most underrated bands to come out of the 80’s. Even though the set was short and focused on the hits, I was quite impressed. It was then that I got to hear how great of a band they were. I was fortunate enough to see one of those in Peoria, IL on July 27, 2005. It wasn’t until there was somewhat of a Hysteria tour reunion in 2005, which saw Tesla return to the opening slot for Def Leppard at a handful of shows. And I knew that they had been an opener for Def Leppard at many shows on their Hysteria tour. Sure, I was aware of a few of their hits. My first real introduction to Tesla came in 2005.
